-
To our friends in Australia,
We don't know what to say.
i'm sorry. We're sorry.
We'll start there.
Why? Why does it snow in one place and rain in another while a third place burns?
Why is life like that?
The following words kept me up most of last night. This came in an email from a friend in Melbourne:
"A few days ago i read a text message that a mother had received from her son who was trapped in the fire - it was his goodbye. This woman broke down in front of me at the thought of never seeing her son again..."
My friend went on to say that he had stood on what used to be a football ground. He said that 56 people had evacuated to this place at the last minute, believing it was safe because it was away from the trees. All 56 of them were killed.
i don't know what to do with stories like that. i don't know what to say in response.
i suppose we just want to say that this has our attention, and that we're going to do everything we can to help. We're talking to friends, especially in Melbourne, to see what's being done and how we can get involved. Rich, Chris and i head to Australia for Soundwave Festival next week, a trip we already had planned, before the fires. The timing is certainly surprising. It hit me late last night in reading that email from my friend, that we have to do something, we have to respond. We have to be creative and do what we do best... i emailed some of our friends who are playing Soundwave, guys who are part of our story. Amazing to think we'll be over there with some of our close friends (Anberlin, Bayside, Aaron Gillespie) in a moment like this. Everyone is willing to help, to say this matters, to do something in response, to go beyond just saying words from a stage...
In closing, i just want to say that our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Australia right now, especially those that have lost ones and homes. We don't want to offer you cheap answers. We do want to say that your questions matter to us, your pain matters to us. Your families, your towns, your stories, your memories. Real things. They matter. You matter.
As much as possible, across an internet and across all the oceans, we want to say that we're with you right now. Australia is a place that moves us, that matters to us - i mean that personally, that i fell in love with Australia last year. We're excited to go back and we hope to see you soon.
Peace to you, from all of us in Florida and around the world.
jamie
We will be at all five dates: Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. (Yes, Perth!) Look for the TWLOHA tent and check the calendar for more info.

Be sure to tell the people in Australia just how much they're loved. Because they are - really. That's all I have to say.

the smell of smoke is still around here, thank you so much for your thoughts. people from high school, even a teacher have lost their lives to this fire. your support means a lot, it's surreal, even unbelievable. it doesn't feel the same in the northern suburbs anymore. im lucky enough to not be affected but everyone here knows someone who has been. there are helicopters and news reporters buzzing around everywhere and nothing right now feels the same. this fire has changed the mood of this city.

Things will get better, they have too.

Everyone is in my prayers. I'm sorry you didn't get much sleep, that happens, but i hope things get better. =]

I live here, in Australia. It's monstrous, what has happened. You can sense the overwhelming sympathy and sadness which is prevalent all across the continent. Everywhere people are pouring their hearts out to help the families and communities who have lost everything, including each other.
Not only are bushfires ravishing, but the floods in QLD are claiming so many homes. Please, pray for everyone.
I will be at Soundwave in Sydney and will definitely check out the TWLOHA tent. (I didn't think there'd be one!) Thank you for coming down under; it's always great to have you guys here.
Love,
Nicole

we are holding up our hands and our hearts for anyone, everyone affected. that includes you, Jamie, and the whole TWLOHA team, as well as every single person who lost someone or something in the fires. we are a family, and when one of us hurts, we feel that pain. something as intense as this cannot be healed quickly... but we'll be praying, i promise you that :)

I know what it's like to have disaster. To all the people in Australlia, I wish you the best of luck and I send my love. Nobody deserves to be in any kind of situation were they are hurt in any way, even if it's not neccasarily on purpose. I hope you all get well and things get better.
--All my love and faith goes out to you--

Today I found out that three of my closest friends died in the fire, and my best friend who has saved my life numerous times is missing, so probably dead. I keep reading this blog. Thankyou Jamie. I'm going to hold onto twloha as everything else falls apart and hope that that's enough.
This means a lot to us Jamie, thankyou from the bottom of my heart.

jamie, thank you. though they are only two words, they are from the deepest spot in my heart.
on the night of february 8th 2009, my best friend broke down in my arms. she told me that she lost four people in the fires. she cried in my arms for two hours after that. everyone in victoria has been affected by the bishfires.
why i tell this story..
after two hours i wrote 'love' on her arm
she smiled, her tears eased, and i sat with her until she fell asleep

My friends are within the areas of the fires and so is my auntie and her family and its really frightening that they keep getting told they may have to evacuate. My schools deputy gave a talk on it today how can you waste your time destroying the toilets at school which the school needs to replace and that costs money money that could be used to help a child who will never hug his father again will never, play fetch with his dog again, never cuddle his teddy bear again, never play football with his best mate again... never take another breath of life again...
My prayers are going out to these people they need it alot right now

my heart goes out to those in australia who have lost loved ones and homes and their way of life. The way life works is so confusing and unfair to those who don't do anything to deserve it. Be sure to let them know that things can and will be better if they just believe that it will, even if all hope is lost.

thank you all so much, its really scary. i got back from a 2 week cruise today, almost all of the 2000 passengers on the ship were from victoria and were all fearing for their loved ones. there is a haze of smoke throughout victoria. i was luck enough not to lose any one in there fires, but i hope the arsonist who lit them gets punished to the full extent of the law.

I live in Australia, and i would just like to say thank you for your support. It means a great deal. I am one of the lucky ones, i was between the fires and the floods so i still have a roof over my head and family to hold. In saying this I too have lost people, friends to both the floods and the fires, and i am grateful for you support in their time of need. It means a lot, the work that you are doing. My hopes and prayers have been with the victims of these disasters and it brings me great joy knowing that they are also in your prayers and wellwishes.
thank you.

I can't imagine how horrible it must be to be living in Austrailia right now. I feel helpless here in Canada for the simple fact that I can't bring over our snow and put out those fires, I'm sad for the people who are having to deal with this and feel helpless because it's their world that's falling apart.
I'm so glad that you guys are going over there despite all of this. I may not believe in God but I do believe in people and in TWLOHA. Everyone you end up talking to there will be changed by you and maybe that will help them cope with the horrors they're being forced to deal with.
It may not mean much but I'm really proud of all of the work that you've done to help people, and the work you continue to do. You've helped so many people in ways you probably can't even imagine, myself included. Thank you for your bravery.

Thank you Jamie, for your words. And everyone for your kind thoughts.
I think everyone in Australia feels at a loss and it's when terrible events like this happen that cause me to question so many things. But ultimately I think out of the darkness always comes light. Against images of pain and suffering are images of families rebuilding, fathers and daughters reuniting and communities, still fighting. Despite everything, there is still hope.
The fundraising efforts have been amazing, people are literally giving the clothes off their own backs. People are giving when it matters most.
I feel so proud to be Australian.
See you at Perth Soundwave!
Nothing but love,
Cassie

I came here because my daughter tells me of this site, and the twloha, love is the movement. She has had a hard struggle over the last two years, but her renewed sense of faith is something that you guys have given her, and for that i thank you sincerely from the bottom of my heart!!
We live near the fires, i can't begin to describe the horror this has brought into our lives, so thank you for all your prayers wishes and thoughts for us all. Please continue to pray as there are still fires going here, and much grieving and healing to come. Also the floods will take months to subside, pray for them too. Many blessings your way and thank you for all you do.

ps. she received her twloha hoody today for her 18th birthday, she loves it!!!

Jaimie, i love that you don't act like you have all the answers. sometimes all someone needs to hear is that there are people that care.
Mates, I'm praying for you. I don't understand why God would let so many people die, but He has a purpose. And He loves you.

Wow. OK, so my heart just pretty much went out to them, When I read that.
I couldn't help but think of my sister who was there not to long ago with a missions organization. It automatically made me think of the friends she has there, though I am not exactly sure what part of Australia, I pray it wasn't that part.
My heart broke at the text message goodbye. How horrid and sad for that to be not only your last text message but the last contact with any person so dear.
When we think a place is safe and then it turns out to be the worst place, it is the worst kind of deception and cruelty. We need a place to feel safe, but when it is destroyed, it breaks us.
They are definitely in my prayers. Thank you for sharing because I had no idea.

i know that this kinda stuff hurts.but the upside of sadness is that you'll become stronger and less vulnerable 2 the harsh world.God bless you all and i promise 2 help out as much as i can.i wish u all good luck and that nothing that drastic will ever happen again.u guys have hit rock bottom, but theres nothing lower than rock bottom so the bright side is the only way is to go up instead of down

My heart and soul sincerely go out to those affected by the fires. This is truly a sad story - and no one deserves any of the sorrow. Our love is sent to Austrailia.
(:
I didn't even know that any of this happened until I read this; and now my day has totally changed. I want to help as much as possible for me to do.
Thank you, TWLOHA, for helping so much. I'm sure that everyone affected appreicates anything given to them. Especially love.

It broke my heart to read that 56 innocent people were killed. You seem to truly have your heart in the right place and on the right path. Reading your blogs has helped me, along with close friends and God, to see what life has in store. And that i CAN change my life and other peoples' as well. I hope to become half of the person you are someday. You have so much to say and i pray that your faith stays strong forever. I believe you have fulfilled God's will: to go and make disciples of all nations.
God bless you and may you continue to bless other people lives and touch their hearts,

You are the light that's leading me to the place where I find peace, again.
You are the strength, that keeps me walking.
You are the hope, that keeps me trusting.
You are the light, to my soul.
You are my purpose, you're everything.
You calm the storms, and you give me rest.
You hold me in your hands, you won't let me fall
You steal my heart, and you take my breath away.
Would you take me in? Take me deeper now.
