i went for the upside down buildings and the special effects. These things will blow your mind and win awards but they are not the reasons you should go. You should go for the humanity of the film. You should go because you will relate to the people stuck in moments, the people living with ghosts, people trying to get home. You should go to be reminded that our lives are also stories and every good story is about someone fighting a battle and there are no enemies greater than the ones called guilt and regret, pain and shame. The movie serves as a reminder that these enemies unchecked will haunt and hunt you always. Thankfully, the movie also serves as reminder that people need other people, that our stories and our battles and our dreams, these things are meant to be shared.

i went for what i saw in the previews, fantastic things pushing and falling and exploding around the characters. i left thinking about the things that push and move in me, my ghosts and wars and dreams. The movie suggests that we are most alive and most awake when we are dreaming. And while a case could be made that it is speaking to the dreaming that occurs when we’re asleep, perhaps it’s true or even more true of the dreams we dream awake.

Inception suggests that there is much at stake; our hearts and our children and the air in our lungs. i am 30 years old. It doesn’t feel old but some days it sounds old when i say or see it. It’s easy to buy into the idea that “dreaming” is a silly word for children, that “battle” means the military and that ghosts are not real. Inception felt like an invitation, a reminder that there might be more to the story, a world we don’t see but one connected to the days we wake to.

There is certainly much at stake. i don’t know your story or your dreams or the things that steal your sleep, but i know they matter. i hope your story is rich with other characters, rich with friends and conversation. i hope you know some people who will carry you and i hope you get to carry them. i hope that there is beauty in your memories and i hope it doesn’t haunt you. And if it does, then i hope there is someone who will talk you through the night and remind you of the promise of the sunrise, that beauty keeps coming, that there are futures worth waiting for and fighting for and that you were made to dream.

    Peace to you tonight.

I personally want to meet the person who came up with the idea for Inception. I'm in love.

It better be nominated by the Oscars! but I doubt it, they seem to be anti-Nolan...

That person is Christopher Nolan! a film-making genius, ALL 7 of his films are brilliant.

I'm blogging about this right now. It's taking a different spin, but reading yours just made everything click for me in a different perspective. I see two lights to this movie now, and I love both of them. It was a wonderful film. :]

i have not seen this movie, yet, although, I recently decided that I would go. Maybe I will go this week.
I honestly don't know what I would do without Jamie's inspiring words.

Jamie,

Your thoughts on the movie made me think. (alot.) about different things that steal my sleep, but also the people who not only talk me through it, but listen to what i have to say. Thank you for the inspiring words.

Hope you're doing well and that you're conquering any wars you may face in life.
Peace to you and TWLOHA,
-Jovie

I also went because of the exploding buildings (partially, at least). But it was the concept of invading someone's dream that really got me to go see it. While the characters unlocked the "safe" of Fischer's subconcious, I started to think about how horrible the things locked up in my "safe" are, and about how I'd never want to visit my own limbo.
Any movie that makes someone think that deeply is fantastic.
And I did love how it put forth the message that death is not the way out.
At least, that's how I saw it.

The last paragraph is beautiful and fills me with hope.

I went BECASUE of the concept(well, also for Leo and Ellen Page); it seemed so crazy to me and the people I went with, so I was really excited. But then when I saw it, I thought the concept was amazing, but they took it too far. At parts it was so simple that anybody could understand, but then it would all of the sudden get commplicated, then it would get simple again. 2 of the people I went with weren't too bright, so they hated it, but the other person and myself are a little smarter, and we liked it, but we were SO confused. I just didn't like the mind rollercoaster(is that a thing?) that it brought you on.

I was at the Do Good Conference on Friday where you spoke about Inception. I squirmed in my seat when you first brought it up b/c I was afraid you might give the movie away (I've been avoiding talking to anyone about it all week). But I heard what you said and went to see the movie that same night. I kept thinking of what you said during the movie and got so much more out of it. Thank you. I will always remember TWLOHA when I speak about and watch Inception. It's an awesome movie and a great reminder that people are hurting and they need someone who sees them. Thanks Jamie! And by the way, your speech was so down to earth that I walked away inspired: perhaps I CAN make a difference too. Thank you!

A very beautiful post... I was afraid of seeing this movie because I thought it would make me feel crazy and I wouldnt be able to make sense of it or it would leave me questioning my life, but Jamie your words help me make my life make sense... its more than the movie. and I thank you for that and also for everything you do.

Jamie thank you so much for posting this. There are places in our mind that we wish never to visit or think about but they come awake in our nightmares. Thank you for the encouraging words that there is always a sunrise. I really like how in the movie Leo says "death is not the answer" that he continues to live to see his kids' faces again.

Thank you for reminding me that there is always someone willing to stay up the night with you. And help you see the dawn. You might wanna check out this song. It rings true for your words "Those Nights" by Skillet

Christopher Nolan is a movie making genius! My Filmmakers class went to see the movie as a group, because we all agree Nolan is a genius, and we were at a loss for words when it ended! Not only did Nolan leave you on edge and confused but he left you wondering where you were? Life, death, dreaming? And I believe this is the message that he is putting across. You never know you're alive, you'll never know when you're dead. There's a thin line you cross and honestly not even a pinch actually lets you know what the true answer is. Your whole life is a dream. In your dreams you can do what you please, you can create anything. And in life you can do the exact same. People say that they never want to wake up from a dream, but if you have the courage to, make your life a dream! Because there really is not enough time, and for all you know you could be dead tomorrow. Life is a process that we are all familiar with, and the only reason we are scared of death is because we aren't familiar with that process. The truth is, Christopher Nolan obviously wasn't thinking that he was going to make a movie with explosions and gunshots, he was going to mess with your mind in a positive way. I applaud him, again, and hope that this film is nominated for something! But if it's not, we all know it's just because Hollywood is jealous of his talent.
Writing love,
Carly.
