Hey Guys.
Exciting news. TWLOHA is included in an article about depression in the new issue of Teen Vogue Magazine. It's the February 2009 issue (Gossip Girl's Leighton Meester on the cover). The article was written by Leigh Belz and can be found on page 106.Depression is something that affects millions of people, and yet very few people talk about it. We've seen change and hope begin to happen as people begin to believe that not only is it okay to talk about depression, it's essential. So with that, we think it's amazing and important that Teen Vogue is talking about it, considering a million people read this magazine.
Behind the scenes: i did the interview with Leigh Belz for this article two different times, once by telephone in 2007, trying to talk louder than the rain outside a restaurant in Hossegor, France. And again a couple months ago, in-person at the Teen Vogue office near Times Square in NYC.
i walked from there to the Paramount Hotel, which is the first place i ever stayed in New York, back in 2002 with my friend Zeke, when we were both working for Hurley. Zeke was lost to suicide in 2006 and so i like to go back to the lobby at the Paramount, to sit and remember him.
It was strange to do the interview so close to this place that reminds me of my friend, to be reminded that these things we talk about, they aren't just words. Issues and ideas and problems and solutions and statistics - these things matter because they represent people, and people are the most important thing. i've sat in that lobby at Paramount with my friend Zeke and now he's gone. So we talk about hope and we talk about help, and community and everything else, so that it doesn't happen again, so that people stay alive.
Check out the article and let us know what you think.
Peace to you.
jamie

That is such exciting new to hear that we are going to be able to have so many more read about TWOHA, not only read it. But if there is a need for help there is an opportunity for them to find what they are looking for. A community that is ready for them with open arms to love them and to help guide them in what there is to be done.

Teen Vogue, talk about meeting people where they are. If I look back at myself when I was 15, that magazine would have arrived to my house and that article would have held so much for a scared girl who was cutting and starving herself. I'm in college now, no longer 15 and I'm not scared anymore, I can honestly say I'm happy, for the first time in a long time :) There are other 15 year old girls right now who were just like I was, and they're going to read that article, and I'm so excited for those possibilities!

I've only read Teen Vogue a few times, but now that I see TWLOHA is going to be in one of the articles, I'll have to go to Hastings or Walmart and buy a copy. There's not many articles or stories in magazines that I come across that talk about depression, depression is an everyday ordeal. I know so many people that just push it off as something else, as if it never existed and it never will. I myself have been battling depression, and the high school I go to, I'm a complete outcast. I only have like four or five friends at school, all of my previous friends all "ditched" me and became snobs. I'm really anxious to read this article because it's about depression and it makes me realize that I'm not the only one thats going through it.

You know what excites me most about this news?
This. Is. Real.
TWLOHA is getting out there and recognized by big-time magazines, TV shows, music artists, etc.
People are hearing about it and getting involved, and to me, that's a miracle.
For so long everyone around me considered depression/cutting/suicide off-limits. It was uncomfortable for them to talk about, so they wrote it off as not important. But now those walls are breaking; people are talking, sharing, healing.
And I thank God for it.

Man, this is really exciting! I realize I'm the only guy commenting on this yet and I doubt I'll get to read the article but I'm so excited to hear that TWLOHA is getting out there! :) They have helped me in so many ways and i pray that this article in Teen Vogue opens thousands of teen girl's eyes to depression. It's such a real thing and so many ppl trash us, call us emo or other more hurtful words, because they don't understand us or don't care to try understanding us...

Although I don't read Teen Vogue, I know many girls that do. And I know that this article may be something they need to hear that people have tried telling them, but they just don't listen. And Nick, you hit it right on the spot about how so many people trash us. It hurts. I'm still a teen and through with my problems (thanks to my heavenly Daddy and a friend) but man, I know I felt that way on the inside. It's those things that make people want to keep everything inside and never talk about what they're going through. But I encourage anyone that if you find someone you KNOW you can talk to, please do. Talking to someone is the best thing you could ever do. And maybe the first person you might think of talking to is God. Just maybe.

Some of my friends make fun of me because i support TWLOHA.i used to cut and i got called an emo kid for it all the time. people dont understand how serious depression and cutting is and i hope this article will open some eyes. i prolly wont get to read this article unless i come across it on the web but someone will and it will make all the difference in their life. im going to read renees story at my church and talk to my church about it. also ive been writing alot of music inspired by TWLOHA and renee.

That is so great. Usually i look at magazines like Teen Vouge and pass them by due to how shallow they can be. But i'll have to check Teen Vouge out. Its great that TWLOHA can get out to the community in so many different ways!! <33
